Starting a new project: Phase 0 and 1

Last week (October 17) we teamed up with another dev, we both wanted to create something and we saw the value in teaming up. This meant that we both knew each have different strengths we could benefit to accelerate development.

So then, Step 1 of starting a new project is: Having a purpose

We both knew that we wanted to create something we enjoy, we had the time and some knowledge, and we also knew that we wanted players to have some fun.

Step 2: Organizing roles

We knew what kind of activities are involved in game dev, so we clarified we both knew about them before proceeding. We wanted to be on the same page (we always want to be on the same page  with our team, though that doesn't mean we have the same vision, more on this on another post).

Step 3: Game Ideas

Since we knew we wanted to make something players have fun with, we knew we had to start small, we quickly thought about Casual Games, specially Browser Games like Haxball.com and a few other multiplayer.

Quickly, thinking about themes we like, we thought about Pirates. Good. Quick decisions, no need to over complicate things (specially when using as inspiration something simple like Haxball.com).

What do Pirates like? Looting. Cool. So if everyone are pirates then they'd need to fight each other for the loot. Cool, good, moving on.

What do Pirates loot? Other ships, towns close to shore, islands, etc. Cool, we thought about using just Islands and ship fights. Great.

So we came up with the idea: A casual browser game about pirates that loot islands and fight other ships for loot and yaarsss!

Step 4: Prototype Design

We jumped into Miro.com and started drawing how a prototype could look like. Quickly we had an idea of 2 pirates connected over the internet and fighting for looting a ship.

Step 5: Project Setup

We both know Unity and is quick and easy to prototype with. We both know GitHub. Great, moving on.

Step 6: Prototype features

- Player connects, has a Pirate Ship

- Multiplayer

- Island spawning

- Looting

- Fighting each other (random winner, for prototyping purposes)

Step 7: Splitting tasks

Now discussing who is going to do what, this is where each other's strengths come handy. But we still want to support each other if we run into blockers.

Now here, after a few days, we are already working on Multiplayer. We want 2 pirates to be able to connect and spawn close.

Just like that we started a project and I'm now sharing the progress. Would you be interested in more dev blogs? Stay tuned.

I'm excited for the final release!

Thank you for the support! We think we have some potential so we started sharing by now
